Making their triumphant return from Outwitters are the Runners, your fast-moving, lightweight class of minion. You get a limited stock of each unit based on how strong the character is, and these disposable Runners add more troops to your squad than any other class in the game.
They’re not much good for fighting, but their Dash ability can practically take them from one side of the map to the other without counting as a movement action. That makes them great at surprise attacks, or exploiting any holes in your opponent’s pillar (base) defense. Tapping your enemy’s pillars for Victory Points is one path to a win, and Runners are great at that if you can keep them alive.

We’ve learned that with 3D, it’s one thing to get your character animated, but it’s a whole other thing to tie it all together in-game. Here’s our latest “running around” tests for the soldier. Used to be when he turned around, his head would spin 180 like the exorcist. But no more!
And here’s us goofing around with some rag doll death.

Here’s the animation for our Defender’s Shield ability, which bonks teammates to grant them a little armor. His shield is for friends, but his club is for enemies.

While we fill in Hex Gambit’s minion artwork, we’re also picking away at some nifty particle effects. We didn’t have the luxury of a particle system in Outwitters, so this has been a lot of fun to play with.
Above is a little blizzard for Bjorgolf’s Cold Feet power, which reduces all of your opponent’s movement speeds by 1 for a turn. And if their movement speed happens to be 1 already, you can count on that enemy staying put. Also Alex clicks a few things we haven’t shown off yet, so you get a tiny peek at a few of the other minions.

Got the Defender’s normal maps in to add some detail. His colors and animation are next! We’re also finally getting around to designing some of the explosions and things, so we’ll have some more moving pictures to show off soon.

Here’s a 360 degree view of the untextured Defender class. With a lot of the weird Blender-to-Unreal quirks worked out of our process, things are starting to move a little faster.

A new game deserves a new class of character! The Defender doesn’t hit as hard as the Soldier or have the reach, but his Blockade ability lets him place temporary barriers to keep your enemies at bay. He can also fortify his teammates with armor, making him a useful support character for offense or defense.
Those of you with some Outwitters experience under your belts may be wondering whether a blockade-placing character would slow the pace of the game down too much (we’ve seen some DENSE Bramble replays). The Defender’s blockade comes with a cooldown and wears off after your opponent’s turn, so it’s a great short-term fix that doesn’t affect the rest of your match like a bramble patch. Movement in general is also a lot more fluid (and free to do) in Hex Gambit than it is in Outwitters, thanks to a cool new moving mechanic that we’ll show off later.

The soldier color morphs are in! The faction you choose to play as in the league will determine which color your team is, and playing 2v2 will give your partner the secondary paint jobs to the right. If things go smoothly, maybe we’ll have time to give you guys even more control over which version of your faction colors you prefer. Almost ready to move on to a new minion!
