The Good Part

The real stars of Hex Gambit will, of course, be the minions!

In our previous strategy game, Outwitters (with which you may be familiar), you’re able to choose from a number of different races that are largely symmetrical, save for one very expensive special unit. Depending how your opponent plays, you may never get a chance to use that special unit in a match.

In Hex Gambit, we’re going for something more personalized and asymmetrical.

Your actual loadout for a match of Hex Gambit will involve picking a Captain to determine your bonus powers, then choosing any combination of 5 minion types to comprise your squad. We’re aiming for 7 total minion types to pick from at launch, giving you 21 different team combinations to explore. That variety will increase exponentially with each new minion we add.

Another cool feature of Hex Gambit’s minions: they’re all the same cheap price to spawn! So whoever you choose to bring with you, you can send them in as soon as you need them without having to save up. This extra freedom is balanced by unit stock: you can add 2 of the ultra-durable brutes to your crew, or bring 4 of the standard soldiers.

Check back next week for more!

I’m still learning the ins and outs of the Unreal Engine, but our Hex Gambit stadium is starting to look a lot more lively.

Captain’s Profile: Lolli

Looking a lot like something out of Dinosaur Comics, Lolli’s bonus powers resemble his sense of style: ridiculous. He’s designed to be the Scrambler of Hex Gambit, so if you like messing with your opponent’s game pieces, he’s your man.

Captain’s Profile: Molera

Molera is a descendant of the warrior queen, Morgera. And just like her ancestor, Molera is absolutely terrifying. She’s not a subtle woman, so all her bonus powers involve incineration.

Captain’s Profile: Salvador

Who’s that handsome devil? A retired military captain, Salvador is best known for the Battle of Forge Hill, where his company of 187 men held their ground against an attacking force of over 2,000. His defensive genius on the battlefield has certainly translated to success in the gambit, where his bonus powers will make your minions feel invincible.

Captain’s Profile: Bjorgolf

Finally, the Frosties are making it into a game! Well… sort of. They won’t be a race you can choose in Hex Gambit, but my old Heavy design is getting new life as Bjorgolf, our ice-themed captain. I’ve been wanting to use this character in a game forever, so having him included feels like sweet restitution. Bjorgolf’s bonus powers center around freezing and slowing down your enemies; great for screwing up their carefully-planned attacks.

Captain’s Profile: Penny Miser

Penny Miser didn’t get as wealthy as she is by spending her money willy nilly. She runs a very tight ship, both in her finances and in her bonus abilities. Where some Captains dump exorbitant amounts of resources into big, flashy displays; Penny offers reasonable, inexpensive bonuses you can afford to use nearly every turn.

Captain’s Profile: Abbacus

by

Abbacus will probably be the first captain you meet in Hex Gambit; he’s planned to be your guide in the game’s tutorial. Being the man responsible for all of the tech that powers the gambit, he’s uniquely over-qualified to be showing you the ropes.

Captains each have their own unique set of bonuses you can cast, and Abbacus’s are themed around his being the “father” of the minions. He can call in reinforcements in ways that bend our normal spawning rules, and he can mess with your opponent’s spawns as well.

We plan on having 5 skill tiers in Hex Gambit, much like we had in Outwitters. Here are the titles and profile badges you’ll be competing for.

Outwitters 2.0.13 Update

by

We recently launched an update to fix push notifications as well as various other bug fixes/improvements that comes with updating to the latest engine. Unfortunately, there have been some newer bugs introduced involving ‘signing in’. Currently a work around is to kill Outwitters and restart it (not to re-install). There are some people experiencing restoring purchases issues that we are looking into. We’ll be rolling out a fix as soon as we can.

Several users have expressed concerns with missing their turns due to a bug preventing them from loading their turn lists. For the time being we’ve disabled turn time outs until we’ve resolved this issue so players will not be forced to lose league points.
