Got the Defender’s normal maps in to add some detail. His colors and animation are next! We’re also finally getting around to designing some of the explosions and things, so we’ll have some more moving pictures to show off soon.

Here’s a 360 degree view of the untextured Defender class. With a lot of the weird Blender-to-Unreal quirks worked out of our process, things are starting to move a little faster.

A new game deserves a new class of character! The Defender doesn’t hit as hard as the Soldier or have the reach, but his Blockade ability lets him place temporary barriers to keep your enemies at bay. He can also fortify his teammates with armor, making him a useful support character for offense or defense.
Those of you with some Outwitters experience under your belts may be wondering whether a blockade-placing character would slow the pace of the game down too much (we’ve seen some DENSE Bramble replays). The Defender’s blockade comes with a cooldown and wears off after your opponent’s turn, so it’s a great short-term fix that doesn’t affect the rest of your match like a bramble patch. Movement in general is also a lot more fluid (and free to do) in Hex Gambit than it is in Outwitters, thanks to a cool new moving mechanic that we’ll show off later.

The soldier color morphs are in! The faction you choose to play as in the league will determine which color your team is, and playing 2v2 will give your partner the secondary paint jobs to the right. If things go smoothly, maybe we’ll have time to give you guys even more control over which version of your faction colors you prefer. Almost ready to move on to a new minion!

The soldier hasn’t been granted the power to move yet, so he’s stuck on this space for now.

These soldier are sporting their formal normal maps and some fresh duds from our Neptis faction line. Still need some work on the metal and plastic materials, but he’s looking good in-game.

Textures are messy business. Especially your first textures for your first models in your first 3d game. I think I’ve redone this guy 4 or 5 different ways, and you can see things start to get a little garbled around the eyes. Learning a lot, though.

Here’s the basic, untextured soldier for Hex Gambit. Next I’ll be adding all the fancy glows and material effects in Unreal.

The Soldier class in Hex Gambit is a versatile fighter. Up close, his Multislash ability lets him distribute the damage from his melee however he wants among surrounding enemies. Dump all 3 damage into one target, or soften up 3 different enemies for 1 damage each. He also brings two other abilities to the table, because each minion in Hex Gambit has three!
