The Blank Canvas

by

5Alex is working on this thing that I’m not allowed to talk about yet, so what am I doing while he’s busy? The same thing I’ve been doing since Gauntlet’s Revenge was released: brainstorming like mad for Game 5.

Amid the porting and the bundling, we’ve been quietly tinkering away on paper prototypes. It’s really early in the process, but so far we’ve been leaning towards turn-based multiplayer concepts. We’ve given ourselves until the end of January to explore, then we’ll go over the lineup and pick a project. The little guy to the side is just some placeholder art from one of my prototypes who happened to have a 5 on him.

    Yes, new concept!

    ..Could it be?

We’ve actually got a few Outwitters 2 prototypes in the mix. We have lots of options, so we’ll pick whatever is the most exciting.

I’ll name my firstborn after you.

I love the idea of an Outwitters 2 for more reasons than one. A sequel means your current player base finally gets new content for one. Another is you don’t even have to have the same 4 teams; you could build a completely new game in the same style with similar gameplay and completely different armies, and it would still be “Outwitters.”

IMO Feedback, Adorables, Scallywags, and Veggienauts aren’t what makes Outwitters Outwitters, it’s wits, bases, spawn spaces and armies that ae the same except for their specials.

Would love another Outwitters type game! Make it happen!

Great to hear – i hope you can monetize it better than Outwitters, it really was such a shame that game didn’t set the world on fire because it was beautifully callibrated as a game and beautiful to look at to boot.

Will you tell us what project you chose at the end of January?

  7. Legacyyyyy says:

If there’s a little guy with an 8 on it can she have a legacy?

  8. Legacyyyyy says:

HOW DARE YOU CALL ME LEGACYOFFIVE?!?!?!
(in the book where my name came from the character Five stabs the character Eight).

Five is an evil evil number.

  9. Bbobb555 says:

Speaking of that series, I saw it at my school library. Sadly, the first book was checked out

    Stannah, aka LegacyofFive. Lol

I personally think Outwitters should be expanded, not recreated (store’s there too), unless it’d be too much of a hassle for programmers. Whether or not it gets replaced i thought of a good team for Outwitters, old or new. I got bored of the same old strategies and would like a fresh spin on them.
My suggestion of a new team would be the Beastborgs: forest animals with some parts, and could be given the description “Fury of the Forest” if put on the store. Sniper could be a Lizard-like creature with a bow, Soldiers might be Beavers because they work hard, a Wild Boar may resemble a Heavy because of their hide, a big Jumping Spider or- for a joke- Squirrels or even chipmunks could fit the Runner’s role, an Owl could resemble a medic, and the Special unit could be a Frog, with low health, high-ish speed, and do sweeping damage. It could attack with a spiked ball on the tip of its tongue, and swing it in a 180 degree arc for about two damage/hit. For choosing targets, the spot next to it could be adjacent to the two spots adjacent to it and the special, but not hurt any of the ball-and-tongue frog’s teammates if they are also in range. The animals could If a death animation is hard to think of, how about turning them into wood and scrap, then incinerating them into ashes?
As for a new game, maybe a jenga-like game with charcters from all of the games OML has made so far, enemies, bosses, Soldiers, not just ones from Outwitters. Maybe a three-way battle board. The goal would be to topple more CPU enemies than your opponent, so that you’re working together but also competing to be hit less and hit more. 2 invaders racing to conquer a base before the other, while defending their own base. So in the end it would be a lot like in Outwitters, but there’d be more co-op stuff. player 3/the cpu player could just have gaurd towers and heavies that stand around attacking the other players, or send theif units (2 base hp, 2 attack, 3-5 speed) to try and steal bonus spaces/block spawn points.
I know took up a lot of room… Sorry if it bugs anyone, i wanted to contribute a lot but not spam the page in doing so. Have a Good Day and God Bless!

I think Outwitters should be expanded, not remade. Either way, I thought of a good team for Outwitters, the Beastborgs: cyborg-animals that live among trees. Sniper could be a Lizard-like creature with a bow, Soldiers might be Beavers because they work hard, a Wild Boar may act as a Heavy, Jumping Spiders/Squirrels/Chipmunks could fit the Runner’s role, an Owl could become a medic, and the Special unit could be a Whopping Frog, with a flail on/for its tongue, low health but able to do sweeping damage. Not sure how fast it should go, probably no faster than a Soldier. It should probably do 2 melee damage in a 2-3 hex-wide arc to all units chosen, maybe even friends. Death animation could be turning into scrap medal and bursting.

Just my bare thoughts, I wanted only to suggest stuff. For a game, maybe king-of-the-hill style? Invaders could race to defeat and occupy a castle, winning when they kill the king or the enemy general. Players would be keepers or breakers, maybe 3-on-1 style.

As excited I am to see a new tbs from OML, I have a strong feeling it wont be a remastered Outwitters which is what I’m really looking for. I say this because if TtL and its sequels are anything to go by, while still fun games, then it will be a pretty significant departure from the original title.

I find that Outwitters is already such a gem at its core level that it would be a shame to see a radical overhaul (as in TtL where the core mechanic for games of that genre – the scoring system – was completely changed) or an entirely new tbs while Outwitters is left to die.

That being said, I’ll still buy it for sure and it may well be a great diversion from Outwitters but I’ll always be holding out hope for a proper Outwitters overhaul.

(I could be completely wrong though and a remastered Outwitters is exactly what we’re gettinf but don’t want to get my hopes up)

I wanna see fresh new concepts. Let OML surprise you without limiting them to sequels and reused ideas.

I dont know what kind of game it’ll be but I’m buying it anyways. Cough cough, just saying, I’ve bought all of one man left game, separately. Fuck*ng love it.
