Here's an interesting thought: if the boards had a predetermined order, or if the game made sure that you never get the same board twice in a row, or if it made sure that you always at least cycled through every map before getting one twice, you would think the selection was random, but it actually wouldn't be random at all.

The fact that you sometimes seem to get the same few boards all at once is proof that it is random. There's a bit of confirmation bias going on here as well; everytime this happens you remember it and it "confirms" your bias that the selection is not random, but then when you get a bunch of different ones it doesn't register in your head.

If you want to select a board, you'll have to play a friendly. The league games are random to stop for example a great sweetie Plains master from starting every game there and winning 95% of the time.
