@ImperialSun: Generally, I agree with you, except that I don't quite agree with "Music is whatever you want it to be." At least, not the exact literal meaning of that statement.
To be honest, I always preferred Cage's "Imaginary Landscape No. 4" for 12 radios over 4'33". There's another piece I heard once that was nothing but four rainsticks for half an hour. You can imagine how that one goes (it doesn't go, it just sits there in one place), but for some reason I loved it. I heard a story once from one of my professors who said that way back before John Cage died, he visited my alma mater and performed a piece he called "Scales." It consisted almost entirely of slapping the strings of a grand piano with a small fish. Also, I once composed a piece of music called "117" and in which you play nothing more than a C# 113 times in a row. I was just being silly, but a lot of people assumed that I meant it to be taken seriously. |
