Ergnomic. They used to be square, but Pokemon handlers kept taking disability due to carpel tunnel and other ergonomic injuries. They thus changed the shape.

When (scientist) discovered the sphere, he made it red and white for show, thus creating the pokeball. Also can you imagine a cube voltorb? voltcube? (orb-cube-get it?)
