[IMPORTANT]: How to: tournament + full tourney list

[IMPORTANT]: How to: tournament + full tourney list
SO, you were thinking about launching an Outwitters tournament. Awesome! But please make sure you do it correctly. Here is a rough guideline to make your tourney epic:

Step 1: The Format

When you're considering a tournament, you need to ask yourself a couple of questions:
  • How many competitors do I want to allow?
  • How do I want the matches to be played?
  • How do I want to organize all results?

I most definitely do not recommend allowing a large amount of competitors in if you're inexperienced. 32 is a reasonable starting size.

As far as the format comes, single elimination might seem practical, but the turn-based nature of the game makes it quite FTA-induced, and matches consisting of multiple games may take a while. Instead, double elimination is a great alternative. An example of that is the Outwitters Super Arena. Alternatives to the elimination idea are a Swiss system or a Round-Robin hybrid with something else (although that takes a bit of experience). Here an example of that, the All-Round All-Stars tournament. Besides that, try to think of some things to spice up your tournament. Like 'Top 200 only' or 'Only Adorables' (even though these examples are already taken). Standard tournaments can quickly get boring.

A excellent tool to quickly host and organize tournaments is challonge.com. You can generate brackets for single/double elimination, Swiss or Round-Robin for free, organize all results easily, and embed live bracket pictures in the tournament thread. If you need some sort of hybrid system though, you won't be able to use it. A good alternative would be to use Google Docs, which, again has the advantage of being able to post results and standings live, which is why i prefer it over simply uploading pdf/docx/xclx files.

Step 2: The Signups

As the organizer, make sure to have a clear format for signups. Data you could ask:

  • GameCenter name;
  • League;
  • Points;
  • Rank;
  • Division (optional);
  • Country representing (optional);
  • etc, etc, etc.

As potential participant, please don't be a douchebag, like this... thing:

All you really achieve with that is catching people's anger, including mine. Here's a proper example:

100 points
Rank #23
Australia

All you then gotta do is sit back, make sure you know when it will happen, and relax!

NOTICE ON IN-GAME PROMOTION THROUGH THE NEWS SECTION

Things get out of control really fast if you do that. Stay keen on the biggest population flood you've ever seen, right on your thread (wait... we've seen that nine times already). Be warned.

Step 3: Playing the tournament

At last. You've made a tournament, you've collected all the signups (whether or not it was with a crazy freaking population flood is up to you), and now we can finally play the tournament. Now, you want to do a few things:

  • Get a matchup list ready, so people know what they are supposed to do.
  • Collect all reported matches in a timely fashion.
  • Make sure that people don't get left with a lot of unanswered questions.

REPORTING MATCHES

Previously, when sending in a replay, you had to add all the data you need with the replay (competitors, winner, map, etc. etc. etc.), and you had to use url tags and stuffs. Luckily there's now a swish plugin on the forums, so you won't have to do that anymore.

HOW TO SEND IN A REPLAY

  1. Go to your Games tab in Outwitters;
  2. Tap and hold on your finished game;
  3. Click 'Copy replay link' when the balloon shows up;
  4. Go to the forums;
  5. Paste the replay link;
  6. Done!

So, something like this:

Code:
outwitters//viewgame?id=ag5vdXR3aXR0ZXJzZ2FtZXIRCxIIR2FtZVJvb20Y8uy-Agw

Will look like this:

Quote:outwitters://viewgame?id=ag5vdXR3aXR0ZXJzZ2FtZXIRCxIIR2FtZVJvb20Y8uy-Agw

Is the name that has an orange background the winner or loser?

Winner. Good advice, Gfich! I will admit I have used Sign me up!" But ONLY on the small informal tournaments that only need your GCID, which is my username.

Good idea! If this is kept up-to-date it makes keeping track of all the tournaments much easier...

RE: [Under Construction] Full tourney list
Good idea. I expect that this is not a complete list since tournaments are missing.
