If you are wanting to work out the skewers and how to avoid them, TTL1's Gauntlet has similar mechanics for the knives and axes.

Why are the skewers the things that annoy me the least?

im having trouble getting past the 3 close calls achievment, but i have no trouble with the skewers themselves.

All I can recommend is to survive into late game, when skewers spawn crazily.
