Alan is right - there isn't really a fool proof method for calculating points other than the win. Without resorting to countless drawn out tie-breaker games the only other firm metrics that can be used for group rankings are base points and turns taken. Both can be an indicator of game 'closeness' and both have their limitations.
I think that one advantage that the base points has over turns at least in the context of the tournament is that points do not encouraging turtling or overly long games. In the end I think we just have to acknowledge that the base points are not necessarily a measure of the closeness of the game, but instead a strategic option you have to use in your game play should you believe that you are in a losing position and in that context I think it's a reasonable option.
