I'm not sure why you wouldn't be able to start friendly matches, unless you've hit the game cap.
If you haven't purchased anything, you have a 5 game limit. You can only play 5 games concurrently at a time. When you start league games, you are automatically matched and you may or may not be player 1 (but you don't get to choose). If there are already games in the queue waiting for opponents, you will be matched as player 2.
