Instead of choosing races and maps up-front, another option is to only predetermine a map that is fairly well-balanced between the races. Then let each team decide on the race - another metagame decision.

Ignoring veggies, here are some fairly well-balanced maps across the races, I think:
* sweet-tooth
* glitch
* sharkfood island
* long 9
* sweetie plains
* war garden
* foundry

Glitch does seem like a nice map to do next. Quite the opposite of Thorn Gulley.
