Sorry to hear you got toasted like that. You'll get used to that eventually. High-level play showed that throwing these units all-in doesn't help any further than to bring the opponent's base down to 1.

You can prevent all this by spawning a Runner near the base and putting it right next to your predeployed Runner. The Heavy takes the bonus space and can eat the Soldier if they choose to attack.
