In base 10 (what we use), we have the 1's place, 10's place, 100's place, 1000's place, etc. But there is another way to write this. 1's place = 10^0 10's place = 10^1 100's place = 10^2 1000's place = 10^3 and so on So binary is "base-2" so to speak. 1's place = 2^0 2's place = 2^1 4's place = 2^2 8's place = 2^3 and so on So this means that if you want to write two in base-2, you have 0 in the 1's place and 1 in the 2's place. That is, 10. Three would be 1 in the 1's place and 1 in the 2's place so 11. I should also mention that in base-10 the highest single digit number allowed is 9 (10-1) so in base-2 the highest single digit number is 1 (2-1). When you get past 9 in base-10 you have to go to the next place and likewise when you get past 1 in base 2 you need to go to the next place. Seven in base-2 is 1 in the 4's place, 1 in the 2's place, 1 in the 1's place so 111. (1*4+1*2+1*1=7). Ten in base-2 is 1010 (1*8+0*4+1*2+0*1=10). |
