I really don't think it was that significant. Perhaps in short games it was, but not in longer matches, I don't think so. This was because the attacking player did not have enough wits to carry out an attack AND provide reinforcements. Meanwhile, the defenders don't have to worry about how far they have to move their troops. I know I had several matches that were extremely back and forth.

The numbers range from 60-65% as reported by the developers. Those are pretty statistically significant numbers.
