What are the factors that influence the points for winning/losing a game?
Hey guys,
I just finished two matches against the same opponent: 1 win and 1 loss. For my win I earned 8 points but for the loss I lost 21 points. My opponent was ranked 3 in our league while I'm at 14. Does anybody know why this is? |

you might have a higher hidden rating than opponent leading to losing more when you lost compared to when he did.

First, Rank/Points don't matter when measuring skill. So, the reason you received little points on your win and a lot of points lost on your loss means your hidden ranking is much higher than your opponent. Hope this helps!

Why on Earth would you keep a HIDDEN ranking?!? How could it possibly be a bad thing for players to know exactly how they rate relative to their peers? Organizations such as the US Chess Federation publish not only their players ratings, but also exactly how those ratings are calculated.

Why on earth would they need to show it?!? so you can compute it yourself? Would you play better if it was revealed? Does it affect how you play each game? Well if it does, its the same with trying to keep your PPG average up so whats the use? what would you do with it? you cant choose your opponents or maps. the only thing you could do is keep winning to get paired with people with higher hidden ratings |

Chess is an unpopular game precisely because people know where they stand |
