What is the advantage of choosing a tie rather than making both show as losing both?

I see a tie as you actually showed up, played and won. I guess it penalizes someone that was responsive? I haven't thought through how the swiss system works so forgive me if this is obvious or simple to answer.

@bmike: I just wanted to have a quick way to set up new rounds, the results will get updated as soon as the games are finished, so I'll only use this artificial tie to make the new pairings.
