I actually think it's more "play-to-win" by the way you're describing it.

Nope because it's quite long to unlock new card packs, but if you pay you instantly have a lot.. That can go up to 44 euros!

So play or pay to win.

This is where these games require you to play with friends, and some evenly built decks. A lot of the current living card games (vs. collect able), are preferable to a lot of people. Magic: the Gathering is a great game, but I don't enjoy playing it against an elitist that spends all his money on cards.

The only flaw I see is that, players who play for more time will have more chances to win, because they will have better cards. It's kinda pay-to-win game, but it's not that problematic ^^

My friend has hearthstone beta and is loving it. I played some - also love it. That game will be a big deal when it is released.

Another game I'm enjoying, similar, and also in beta - Faeria. http://www.faeria.net/ I know Alvendor plays as well. It's a nice mix between board game tactics and card game strategy.

I have faeria but haven't had the time to check it out. I might during Christmas break.

Im playing kings of chaos right now.. its played on a browser and everything is displayed in text.. not sure what kind of genre it lands on..

Overview

In Kings of Chaos, you are in command of an army of humans, elves, dwarves, orcs, or undead. To be successful, you must manage your army and defeat your enemies. You must keep your troops in top condition and recover from losses. A powerful army will be strong in all four aspects of the game: attacking, defending, spying, and sentry (counter-intelligence). This makes it important to keep your forces and efforts relatively balanced in all these areas.

If any of you want to give this a shot please list me up as your commander. haha

heres an example of an attack log to get a better view on the type of game this is
Code:
Your soldiers march onto the battlefield
Your generals report on your army's status:

100 of your soldiers are trained attack specialists
81 of your army consists of untrained soldiers
56 of your trained soldiers receive weapons and 44 are weaponless

1 are given a Battle Axe
19 are given a Hammer of Thor
36 are given a Knife
None of your 81 untrained soldiers have weapons

0 are given a Battle Axe
0 are given a Hammer of Thor
0 are given a Knife
Your field scouts report on the status of the enemy:
The enemy has all 5 trained soldiers with weapons
The enemy has 20 untrained soldiers with weapons and 658 with no weapons

Both sides charge!
Your army strikes!

0 Battle Axe were sabotaged by enemy spies!!
0 Hammer of Thor were sabotaged by enemy spies!!
0 Knife were sabotaged by enemy spies!!
Your troops inflict 12,948 damage on the enemy!
The enemy sustains 1 casualties!

ElvernMaster's forces counter-attack and inflict 2,225 damage on your army!
Your army sustains 0 casualties!
Your generals report on your weapon damage:
Battle Axe
All were used
0 were found to be sabotaged
Weapon strength went from 256 to 255.78
Hammer of Thor
All were used
0 were found to be sabotaged
Weapon strength went from 64 to 64.00
Knife
All were used
0 were found to be sabotaged
Weapon strength went from 1 to 1.00

You nullified the enemy!
As ElvernMaster's army runs from the battlefield you examine the collected spoils:
You stole 1,091,051 gold from ElvernMaster!
You return to camp, your troops elated from your glorious victory.

I've been playing Ascension and Shadow Era a lot (I'm a Magic player so TCGs that are similar are fun)

Shadow Era is cool, but definitely pay to win. You build a deck and play other people online. It's fun but the play gets repetitive especially since the cardpool is really small right now so there are really only a handful of decks you can make.

I'll have to check out some of these though, a lot of fun sounding games in here

If anyone is playing faeria please let me know! Hard to find people willing to play with me (low level) in the closed beta.

think blizzard posted quite an interesting stat where something like 44% of 3-Star Master players have spent no money on Hearthstone. Plus hearing anecdotes from several top master players who claim to have gotten there purely on starter decks.

Nonetheless, when you meet a really stacked deck it can be frustrating. Fun game though!
