I think to stop all this spam, you must not allow newbies make new threads, and since you don't need a lot of things to be upgraded, it shouldn't deter new members

myBB just released a new version of the forum software (1.8). Has a lot of new goodies for stopping spam, which should help greatly. I'll try to get it rolled out soon.
