How about another scale problem?
You have a scale for comparing the weights of objects (i.e. two dishes suspended from either end of a shared rod). You also have twelve miniature tiki heads, all of which are supposed to be the exact same weight, but you have been informed that one of them differs in weight from the other eleven. They are all visually identical, and you can't tell any difference by holding them in your hands, so you don't know which is the discrepancy head. You also don't know if the different head is heavier or lighter than the others. The heads will answer yes or no questions when asked, but their responses are in an ancient language that you don't understand, and their responses are actually completely random anyway, so this is of no real use to you and is probably just a red herring.
Can you determine which tiki head is the odd one out and also whether it is heavier or lighter than the others by using the scale to compare weights only three times?
(I think this one is different from the others that were posted already. If it's the same, then sorry, just ignore me.)

I know this one except the story was there are 12 keys that come in a bunch of different colors and the one that opens the door is lighter than all the others and you have a scale and after the third weighing, it falls apart. If it breaks, the beast will bust down his door and eat you. And if you use the wrong key, the beast's door will open instead.

I have a solution:

We name the heads A to L. First off, we weigh A to D against E to H. Say A to D were lighter. Now we know that I to L were clean. Now, we weigh A, B, E and F against C, G, I and J, and leave D and H aside. Say that the group with A was lighter. Now either A or B is lighter, or G is heavier. Now we weigh A and G against I and J. Now you can see that either A is lighter or G is heavier, or deduct that B was lighter. If the second reading gave equal weights, we can do the same thing, with D or H instead.
Now say that instead, the first reading gave equal weights. This means that any of I to L is either heavier or lighter. Now we weigh I and J against K and A. This is basically the same thing we did previously, and we can deduct exactly with a third reading what head is oddly weighted.
