Umm, on iPad, I think it's easier to maintain a combo as there are far more dots and 4x the space. Also, there are huge barricades of dots that go charging at you, which you might see in the videos, and these help rack up your points. However, you only get 4 powerups on screen at once, and the turret is terrible-ish.
I like HD because of the stuff above, but the turret is much better in SD, so VLT I much more fun and easy on SD. I play SD on my iPad anyway, because my 2nd gen iPod can't take more than 200 or so crystals on screen, whereas my iPad can go into the 2000s

Don't think so. iPad tilt controls are so much more inaccurate IMO.
