RE: Q & A: Retardedness - Eijolend - 01-20-2013 03:55 AM Why is this so complicated? I know Franklin is dead, but who is this Mr Frankln? RE: Q & A: Retardedness - Wildt4lon - 01-20-2013 03:58 AM Wrong, Ekofox 14g-5gk-6xy mwahaha ![]() RE: Q & A: Retardedness - EkoFox - 01-20-2013 06:33 AM Ok, that's not a simplification, that's a change of the expression. You get a different result if you evaluate that versus the original expression. Example: For g = 1, k = 2, x = 3, y = 4; Original expression = -68 Your 'simplified' expression = 76 Order of operations is important. Back on topic: That was supposed to be Ben Franklin... What's the difference between saying, " I mean what I say" and' "I say what I mean?" (Answering eijolend's question) Because we're all mad here. FIRST EXPRESSION: 14*1-(5*1*2+6*3*4)=14-(10+72)=14-82=-68. SECOND EXPRESSION: 14*1-5*2*1-6*3*4=14-10-72=-68. I can math properly ![]() RE: Q & A: Retardedness - Wildt4lon - 01-20-2013 07:19 AM I think some of your maths is a little rusty, ekofox RE: Q & A: Retardedness - EkoFox - 01-20-2013 07:26 AM In your second expression you swapped an addition with a subtraction symbol. I was solving as if you had only taken out the parentheses. RE: Q & A: Retardedness - Wildt4lon - 01-20-2013 07:26 AM What's the answer to this question? Well, 'I mean what I say' means that you mean what you say. And of course, 'I say what I mean' means that you say what you mean. ![]() Ekofox, I swapped + for a - AND got rid of the brackets. Any clues there? RE: Q & A: Retardedness - EkoFox - 01-20-2013 07:31 AM (01-20-2013 07:26 AM)Wildtalon1851 Wrote: Honesty, that's because you're * by -1!When do you multiply by -1? If you're saying you multiplied the whole thing by -1, the it would have to be -1(14g - (5gk + 6xy)) = -14g - (-5gk - 6xy). But the point is that is the expression in its simplest form; you can't just multiply by random numbers and call it simplified. RE: Q & A: Retardedness - Wildt4lon - 01-20-2013 07:34 AM 14g-(etc. I'll let you work it out. C'mon this is only lvl 6 maths! RE: Q & A: Retardedness - EkoFox - 01-20-2013 07:46 AM I'm going to type out my interpretation and you tell me if I got it wrong: 14 multiplied by variable 'g' minus quantity 5 multiplied by g multiplied by k plus 6 multiplied by x multiplied by y. You're asking me to evaluate (5gk + 6xy) and subtract the result from 14g. Right or wrong? My thought is that you meant 14g(5gk+6xy) (without the subtraction) and wanted me to apply the distributive property. But you're saying that 14g - (5gk + 6xy) is the same thing as 14g - 5gk - 6xy, right? |
