Hmm. I have played super smash bros, and the idea for it to be "wittier" intrigues.

If we're talking classic characters, I like Link, Fox, and DK. Marth is probably my favorite character overall since he's great both for casual and competitive play. Also a big fan of Roy and Ike, since Fire Emblem is probably my favorite series ever. Roy's a lot like Marth, Ike is actually a terrible character and difficult to play but he smashes everything so it's fun. Luigi is also top-notch, in my opinion.

Love me some smash! Big fan of Zelda/Shiek in Brawl even though she's terrible in competitive play.

Sheik is underrated, solid character. Same with Zero-Suit Samus.

I have a hard time landing a killing blow with Sheik in Brawl. Maybe I just need a better ledge game.
